Grand Excursions in Spain & Morocco: June 1 – 15, 2023
“Grand Excursions in Spain and Morocco” offers a two-week faculty-led June 1-15, 2023, program in Spain and Morocco with a three credit UCORE course: Com 421. Com 421 advances diversity, information literacy, critical thinking, and communication. We will delve into the intercultural dimensions of Spanish and Moroccan culture while also reflecting on the globalization and historical complexities and colonization of our surroundings. Experiencing culture on a direct level will allow us to grasp the importance of appreciating cultural values, differences, and similarities. We will directly engage with citizenship and examine our conscious and unconscious biases, positionality, and privilege. Students will have the opportunity to research and present cultural dynamic experiences first-hand, creating web-based, social media blogs that incorporate intercultural connections and public relations techniques.
Group excursions will enable greater opportunities for direct connection with local culture. While in Seville we will experience the art of Flamenco in all its intense vibrancy. The archeological and religious relevance of Seville will also be examined. A visit to Cadiz, an ancient port city, will connect us to the Mediterranean history of Spain through the home of the Spanish Navy. Granada and the great palace, Alhambra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, will link the Islamic and Spanish historical significance during this pivotal experience. Students will also have the pleasure of visiting Tangier, Morocco. This is the only faculty-led excursion to Morocco offered at WSU. During this time, we will visit holy sites and delve into the richness of Islamic culture, food, and architecture. Perhaps even a camel ride, just for fun!
Join us as we broaden our minds and cultural awareness, as we connect cross-culturally and are humbled by the beauty of it all.
