Scholarship Recipient Spotlight: Malia Jae Ruud

A proud Washingtonian from Pasco, Malia Ruud arrived at Washington State University eager to pursue both her academic goals and her love of athletics. Now a communications major on the Pullman campus, Malia is grateful for the athletic scholarship that allows her to compete at a high level while earning her degree—an opportunity she says means more than words can fully express.

The Murrow News Fellowship gives early career journalists the opportunity to report from places that are underserved by journalism. There are 16 fellows spread throughout Washington. Earlier this year, the program announced an ambitious goal of placing a news fellow in all 39 counties. We talk with Benjamin Shors, who directs the Murrow News Fellowship program at WSU.

WSU recognized for support of first-generation students

Washington State University was recently promoted to a Network Champion of FirstGen Forward, an organization dedicated to improving the educational outcomes of first-generation college students. This elevation heralds the university’s progress in supporting and empowering students who are working to become the first in their immediate families to complete a college degree.
