The U.S. Forest Service’s contracted fleet of aging air tankers continues to fly — and crash – fighting fires in hazardous terrain. Six people died in air tanker crashes during firefighting missions this year, and at least 22 have perished in the past decade, according to an investigation by Murrow News Service students for NBCNews.com.
