Biography
Opeyemi Victoria Johnson (M.A., Washington State University) is a Ph.D. student at The Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University. She is a dedicated researcher and educator. She explores the areas of health communication, media literacy, and early parent-child communication, seeking to strengthen relationships and enhance dialogue about sexual boundaries through the innovative use of books as educational tools. Her work is anchored in the belief that informed and open discussions between parents and children can significantly reduce the incidence of sexual assault.
In the classroom, she brings her research interests to life, imparting knowledge on media’s role in health promotion, mainly focusing on crafting effective messages for women. Her expertise in designing curricula for sex education programs reflects her commitment to preventative measures and the empowerment of mothers with young children through informed communication.
Opeyemi’s professional journey has been enriched by implementing health messages in media campaigns, where she has witnessed firsthand the impact of well-structured communication on public health. This experience underpins her research as she investigates the efficacy of media in disseminating health messages and its consequential role in shaping societal norms and behaviors.
Beyond academia, Opeyemi’s involvement with community outreach programs has afforded her the opportunity to apply her findings in practical settings, working closely with parents and educators to facilitate workshops that encourage proactive engagement in children’s media consumption and understanding of consent.
In summary, Opeyemi’s multifaceted research interests converge on a singular goal: to enhance the fabric of early communication within families, utilize media as a catalyst for positive change, and foster environments where children can grow into informed individuals aware of their rights and boundaries. Her commitment to this cause is evident in every lecture she delivers, every study she conducts, and every interaction she has with the community as she strives to create a safer, more educated society.
