Biography

Jody Brannon joined the Murrow College in September 2023 as manager of the Murrow News Fellowship program. Brannon began her career in her native Washington, working for niche newspapers and magazines before moving to the Tacoma News Tribune and Seattle Times. Her background includes leadership positions in digital newspapers (WashingtonPost.com, USAToday.com), magazines (National Journal, National Geographic), a portal (MSN), a standalone emphasizing innovation (News21), mobile (Microsoft and Gannett Digital), search (Bing News) and a think tank focused on sustaining local news (Center for Journalism & Liberty). She served on the Online News Association’s board of directors for 10 years.

As an educator, she has taught at her three alma maters as well as Pacific Lutheran University. She directed the field program of the Carnegie-Knight Initiative on the Future of Journalism Education, headquartered at Arizona State University, and managed the disruptive educators fellowship program at CUNY’s Tow-Knight Center for Entrepreneurial Journalism.
Brannon’s 1999 doctorate focused on the evolution of adapting and producing journalism for the Web: “Maximizing the Medium: Assessing Impediments to Performing Multimedia Journalism at Three News Websites: ABC News, NPR and USA TODAY.”

A Seattle native, Brannon works remotely from her home on Puget Sound, where she enjoys reading, kayaking, dogs and mentoring journalists eager to evolve.
