Does Murrow College typically compensate speakers?
The Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University is a public institution with limited event funding and cannot financially compensate our participants. Most speakers and their companies recognize the importance of being part of WSU’s education events and embrace a philanthropic spirit by funding travel and lodging. WSU’s educational events provide speakers the opportunity to demonstrate their expertise, knowledge and experience, as well as to network with constituents for business development purposes. In appreciation for all the hard work and effort, Murrow College recognizes speakers and their companies as “conference supporters” in conference literature distributed to delegates in print and online. Speakers are eligible for special University room rates at area hotels.

Are there any speaker scholarships available?
The Murrow Symposium is dedicated to diversity at our events and therefore offer a limited number of scholarships to potential speakers who might not otherwise be able to attend and participate in Symposium. These awards are primarily open to applicants who:

  • Graduated within two years of the event;
  • Serve organizations that do not support employee travel; and/or
  • Give up pay in order to participate in Symposium.

Awards are made by the Murrow Symposium Committee and are based on a demonstration of excellence in the applicant’s field as well as financial need. Scholarships are paid directly to the speaker. Speakers are responsible for their own travel and accommodation arrangements and fees. If you would like to apply for a scholarship, please contact corrie.wilder@wsu.edu for details.
