Sexual Scripts in Music Media: How do parents and teens talk about violence and sex in music media. We’re conducting observations of 50 parents and their teens as they talk about music videos. This project is funded by the National Council on Family Relations and the WSU College of Agricultural, Human and Natural Resources.

Making Sense of Mediated Sexual Scripts and Adolescents’ Romantic Relationships
We’re conducting focus groups and in-depth interviews to explore how adolescents and young adults use the media to form sexual scripts, and to identify ways in which these sexual scripts influence their behavior in romantic relationships.
Drs. Stacey J.T. Hust and Kathleen Rodgers began their scholarly collaboration because of a common interest in furthering understanding of media’s influence on adolescent and emerging adults’ sexual script development and sexual risk behavior. Dr. Hust’s work in gender, media effects, and sexual assault among college students, and Dr. Rodgers’ work in the area of adolescence development and sexuality complement each other well in this collaboration. We have three primary domains of research: (1) media and dating/intimate partner violence, (2) media and healthy romantic relationships, and (3) adolescent and parent communication about media messages.
- Hust and Rodgers received the 2014 Mary Ann Yodelis Smith Award for Feminist Research from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.
- Rodgers and Hust earned one of two National Council on Family Relations Innovation Grants in 2014.
