Rebecca White and Forrest Holt, both juniors in the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication, worked in Olympia during the 2017 legislative session as part of the college’s Olympia statehouse program.
“Every Murrow student should want this internship,” said Forrest Holt, who worked for the Tacoma News Tribune. “You can learn so much and connect with people who have been reporting for decades. The work is challenging, but it is some of the best and most fulfilling content I have ever worked on.”
Since 2011, the Murrow College has enlisted top journalism students to cover the state legislative session for news outlets in the Pacific Northwest. The students provide in-depth coverage of the Washington Legislature at a time when many news organizations have shrunk or shuttered their statehouse bureaus.
Junior Rebecca White covered the legislative session for the Columbia Basin Herald, producing stories on Internet privacy, budget negotiations, and the state Supreme Court.
“I made professional connections and had a chance to write about a lot of different issues, so I now have a lot of good clips to use for future jobs,” White said.
Holt teamed with veteran reporters at the Tribune on several reporting projects.
“It was the best experience of my young journalism career,” Holt said.
