Criteria:
This scholarship in communications shall be given to a junior student certified in communications with preference given to those specializing in the area of radio broadcast. The recipient shall be in good academic standing, involved in student communications/broadcasting organizations/clubs, and show financial need. The student must show good character and leadership ability. The scholarship may be renewed a second year dependent upon fulfillment of the following requirements: one, the recipient must fulfill the requirements to remain in the broadcasting program, and two, the recipient must meet annually with the donors to discuss progress and gain understanding of the impact Mr. Kaufman had on people’s lives. Prior to this meeting the student will receive an article about mark Kaufman and view the 1995 Kentucky Derby video.

History:
As a former Washington State University student, Mark Kaufman was honored and revered by many as a good friend and a decent human being. Kaufman, a former student in communications, was raised in Seattle and attended Garfield High School. Kaufman began his involvement in the horse racing industry as a flag boy on the Longacres starting gate crew. Kaufman spent more than 30 years in horse racing. From flag boy to director of special projects for the Emerald Racing Association, Kaufman was involved in many aspects of publicity and communications. After leaving Washington State University, Kaufman served as play-by-play announcer for Cougar football and basketball games and worked with the Cougar Radio Network. This gift to Washington State University is in honor of his interest in and dedication to the field of communications. He will always be remembered by his friends as someone who had a zest for living, giving and sharing.
