Biography

Dr. Justin Barnes is a Scholarly Associate Professor in the Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University. Before joining the Murrow College, Dr. Barnes was a faculty member in Journalism and Mass Media at the University of Idaho and began his academic career as a faculty member in the Sport Management Program at Washington State University.

Dr. Barnes’s professional career in media began at Ruder Finn Public Relations and Marketing Inc. in New York City. Throughout his employment at RF, Dr. Barnes assisted in public relations, advertising and integrated marketing communication campaigns. In addition, he worked on new business proposals and research regarding company trends in branding and marketing. Dr. Barnes also coordinated the assessment of corporate interns.

His most recent projects concern impactful virtual pedagogy, career advancement in communication, athletic success and its effect on the perception of an institution’s academic reputation and social media’s effect on exercise adherence. Dr. Barnes’s other projects concern career advancement through golf participation, aggression in women’s collegiate soccer, servant leadership for coaches and why rule based ethics are problematic for the NCAA.
