Meet Jane!

Jane McDonald is a senior studying Journalism and Media Production with an emphasis in Broadcast News. Jane knew she was going to be a Murrow student at the age of 12 when she toured the school with her older sister.

“As an incredibly shy person, I felt extremely uncomfortable walking into a studio with bright lights and cameras,” Jane said. “As the day went on, I saw how collaborative and exciting television news was. From that moment on, I knew that the Murrow College and studio was a place I had to return to.”

For the past two years, Jane has been a member of the Murrow Ambassadors program and has served as the Vice President of Recruitment since last year. She also served as Assistant Director for Cable 8 Productions.

Jane’s favorite class at WSU has been Murrow News 8, which is a nightly newscast produced, written, anchored and crewed entirely by Murrow students. Her goal after graduation is to report and share meaningful stories.

“The ability to produce and report in a professional setting has been an amazing experience,” she said.

A fun fact about Jane is that she grew up as a UW Husky fan. Her mom graduated from the University of Washington and always donned the purple and gold. Jane reports that her mom is now a proud Coug and has replaced most of her Husky merchandise with the iconic crimson and gray.

One piece of advice that Jane offers would be to get involved with clubs on campus and to not be afraid to reach out to Murrow College staff.

“The Edward R. Murrow College has granted me so many opportunities to grow as an individual, and there would have been severely fewer opportunities if I had not stepped out of my comfort zone,” Jane said.
