Jakob Thorington is a senior at Murrow College majoring in Journalism & Media Production and Multimedia Journalism. He first heard about Murrow during his senior year of high school when he was looking at colleges. He knew he wanted to be a Coug but was unsure what exactly he wanted to pursue. One thing he knew was that he really enjoyed writing. After doing more research and hearing praise about Murrow from his WSU tour guide, Jakob was set.

“It was that Murrow reputation that sold me not only on the school with what I wanted to do, but Washington State University as a whole,” Jakob said.

Jakob’s favorite aspects of the Murrow College are how tightly knit the faculty and staff are with the students, along with how all of his professors are always willing to help and offer great insight.

“They want to see us succeed and that really gives me a boost whenever I’m in class or working on an assignment.” Jakob said.

Jakob is a reporter and copy chief at The Daily Evergreen, spending most of his evenings down in the newsroom of Murrow Hall where the offices are located. When Jakob isn’t working in Murrow Hall, he spends his time at the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture as a communications intern.

Aside from making connections at the Daily Evergreen, Jakob’s favorite Murrow experience was participating in the Rural Reporting Plunge, an experiential learning project where students learn to report on rural issues in small towns throughout Washington and Idaho.

“Finding stories on the fly was so much fun and I felt like I was in that community (of Waitsburg, WA) by the time it was time to go back to Pullman.”

Before coming to WSU, Jakob wasn’t as confident in his writing and reporting abilities, but all of that has changed since coming to Murrow. He’s appreciative of faculty pushing him out of his comfort zone and feels comfortable entering the real-world after graduation.

“When May comes, I’m confident for whatever comes next.”
