Criteria

The Calvin A. Watson Award shall be given annually to an “outstanding junior student” majoring in the theater arts and drama option in the Department of Speech or the broadcasting option in the Department of Communications.

History

Calvin A. Watson was the second manager for the Washington State University television station, KWSC (following the creation of the station under manager, Allen Miller). In 1969 the station became KWSU Radio-TV Services and Calvin was hired as the General Manager. He assisted with the design of Murrow West, but before its construction, he left for Washington, D.C. to work as the Director of Television Activities at the newly created Corporation for Public Broadcasting. He stayed with CPB for eleven years and passed away in 1982 at the age of 56. Studio B located on the 1st floor of Murrow West is named in his honor.
