Criteria

One or more scholarships will be awarded to WSU students according to the following criteria:

  1. Current, full-time, regularly enrolled undergraduate students. (No incoming Freshmen)
  2. Pursuing a course of study leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Communication, specializing in Broadcasting, Broadcast Journalism, or similar course of study.
  3. Demonstrated financial need
  4. Demonstrated dependability, integrity, and willingness to work above and beyond what is expected of them.

If in the opinion of the selection committee, no one adequately meets the above criteria during a given year, then a scholarship will not be awarded for that year. Further, in the event that two or more candidates have equal need and ability, preference shall be given to any female candidate.

A committee composed of the sitting station manager of KWSU television and no fewer than two Murrow College of Communication Broadcasting faculties will select scholarship recipients. Each student receiving an award will be asked to write a note of appreciation to the family of Beatrice L. Fry.

History

The Beatrice L. Fry Memorial Scholarship Fund was established as a result of gifts and contributions received and to be received from friends and family in memory of Beatrice L. Fry, who, from 1957 until her death on June 14, 1971, served the Washington State University Radio Television Services as Manager of the WSU Transcription Service, Information Editor, and most recently as Assistant to the General Manager. Mrs. Fry was a key figure in putting KWSU-TV into operation. In 1970, she received the Sugar Plum Award, the highest award of the Washington Press Women’s Association, for her contribution to television journalism.
