WHAT IS COM 495?
COM 495 allows a student to receive up to 6 credits (with a minimum of 2) during the course in the fall, spring or summer terms for an academic internship. The internship can be paid or unpaid. Internships may not require a student to perform clerical work more than 25% of the time. It is a class as well, so there will be some course assignments that will be turned in for grading.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO TAKE COM 495?
All Murrow certified juniors and seniors who are in good academic standing with an overall GPA of at least 2.35. You are REQUIRED to have completed and passed COM 300.
DOES MY INTERNSHIP HAVE TO TAKE PLACE IN PULLMAN?
No! Your internship can be anywhere that is required by the sponsoring organization.
HOW DO I FIND AN INTERNSHIP IF I AM INTERESTED?
- The Murrow Student Services team will post internships on the internship board and keep this information in binders stored in the Student Services main office.
- Make an appointment with Tim Osborn, the Murrow Professional Development Coordinator. He can help with your search.
- Check on Murrow Jobs on Facebook, WSU’s Academic Success & Career Center (ASCC) website, WSU’s Handshake program, or any other internship website that you would like to use.
ONCE I FIND MY INTERNSHIP, WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?
Remember, your internship has to first receive approval as an appropriate Communication internship. Go to the Murrow College of Communication page on CougSync. Navigate to the communication internship application under “Forms.” READ THE APPLICATION FORM CLOSELY as you fill it out, and then submit. Within a few business days, your application will either be approved or denied. The Murrow Student Services staff will then add COM 495 to your schedule.
HOW MANY HOURS DO I NEED TO WORK FOR CLASS CREDIT?
Your internship has to be at least two (2) credits. 53.3 hours of work = one (1) credit. So, you have to be able to complete at least 106.6 hours over the course of the term you have selected.
