ABOUT THE MURROW NEWS SERVICE

Founded in 2011, the Murrow News Service provides students with experience in producing professional news stories, and provides public-interest journalism to media partners. The MNS has produced stories for local, regional and national media outlets including The Spokesman-Review, The Oregonian, The Seattle Times, MSNBC.com (now NBCnews.com), PBS.org, KOMO.com, The Moscow-Pullman Daily News, The Tri-City Herald, Vancouver Columbian, Crosscut.com, and numerous others. The student work has resulted in numerous national and regional reporting awards.

Murrow News Service content is developed in the journalism classes taught by Benjamin Shors, a clinical associate professor.

To become a media partner, contact Professor Shors at bshors@wsu.edu.

Olympia Bureau

The Murrow News Service pairs Washington State University students with professional news organizations to provide multi-platform content each spring semester.

Olympia-based students from The Edward R. Murrow College of Communication receive a minimum stipend of $250 per week from the sponsoring news organization and earn up to 12 academic credits from the Murrow College for a semester internship with the Olympia program. Prior to the start of each session, student journalists receive training on the Washington Legislature and complete a visit to the sponsoring news organization.

The students provide coverage from January through the first week in May. Internships may be extended into the summer through a mutual agreement between the sponsoring news organization and the student journalist.
