Thesis and non-thesis options are available in the M. A. program. In general, those interested in pursuing doctoral work choose the thesis option while those planning other career options choose the non-thesis option.
Thesis Option Requirements
(Minimum of 27 graded credits)
- Core (3 x 3 = 9 credits)
- COM 570 – Communication Theory (3)
- COM 509 – Quantitative Research (3)
- Methods course from inside or outside – approved by advisor (3)
- Major Area of Concentration (18 credits)
- Chosen in consultation with the advisor and committee
- 12-15 from inside the College of Communication
- 3-6 from outside the College of Communication
- COM 700 – Thesis (9 credits)
- COM 500 – Colloquium (4 x 1 credit = 4)
- Total = 40 credits
Note: 3 credits of independent study (S/F) may be substituted for three credits of graded coursework
Non-Thesis Option Requirements
(Minimum of 33 graded credits)
- Core (3 x 3 = 9 credits)
- COM 570 – Communication Theory (3)
- COM 509 – Quantitative Research (3)
- Methods course from inside or outside – approved by advisor (3)
- Major Area of Concentration (24 credits)
- Chosen in consultation with the advisor and committee
- 15-18 from inside the College of Communication
- 6-9 from outside the College of Communication
- COM 702 – Exam (4 credits)
- COM 500 – Colloquium (3 x 1 credit = 3)
- Total = 40 credits

M.A. Application Deadlines
Students are admitted to the M. A. program for fall semester. Completed applications must be submitted to the Graduate School by January 10 for fall admission. The priority deadline is December 31.
